Balmerino Abbey

Balmerino Abbey, a Cistercian monastery founded in 1229 by the widowed queen of William the Lyon, was destroyed during the Reformation but in 1936 its remains were given into the care of the National Trust for Scotland by the Earl of Dundee.
A Spanish Chestnut tree here is one of the oldest of its kind in the country. The village of Balmerino was designated a Conservation Area in 1987.
